KCCA Moves Closer to Approving Nakivubo Channel Upgrade

KAMPALA-UGANDA | Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has taken another step toward solving one of the city’s longest-running problems. Officials confirmed that the KCCA Nakivubo Channel redevelopment plan by Kiham Enterprise U Limited is under final review. The announcement followed a high-level meeting with Dr. Hamis Kiggundu, the businessman financing the project.

Although KCCA paused full construction, it authorized ongoing maintenance. Workers continue to clear waste, unblock water paths, and remove silt to avoid flooding. Safety hoarding also remains around the site to protect the public. At the same time, a technical team will supervise the redesign, making sure engineering standards, environmental rules, and planning requirements are met.

For decades, the open channel caused major problems in Kampala. It trapped solid waste, sparked floods in the city center, and created security threats. People lost lives in accidents, and criminals used it as a hideout. The new plan intends to end these risks by replacing the trench with a covered drainage system. It also promises walkways, green areas, and better utilities for residents and businesses.

The project holds wider national importance. During recent visits, Confederation of African Football (CAF) inspectors insisted the channel must be covered before Uganda can host the Africa Cup of Nations in 2027. With Nakivubo Stadium already meeting CAF standards, redeveloping the drainage remains the last key requirement.

For many Kampala residents, the project offers long-awaited hope. While approvals take time, the process signals progress. By combining private investment with government oversight, the redevelopment aims to deliver a safer and modern capital city.
