The Deputy Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has told MPs that President Yoweri Museveni will address the nation on the fight against corruption on Thursday.
Kampala, Uganda| ‘I have been informed by the ministry in charge of ethics that the Head of State will address the country about corruption on Thursday (December 9, 2021). So if you want to hear from him about corruption, you should listen to him on that day,’ Among told the House during Tuesday’s plenary session.
December 9 marks International Anti-Corruption Day and Uganda will commemorate it at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds in Kampala.
The Bukedea Woman MP said if they agree as Parliament and communities that they are going to fight corruption, it will help in creating more jobs and securing wider essential services such as roads, schools and hospitals.
‘Parliament is committed to support the Anti-corruption agencies to do their work,’ Among said.
She noted that when MPs are paid a salary and they don’t show up to do their work, that is corruption.
‘It is also corruption when we sit and watch do district officials hire out the equipment which is supposed to be for public works,’ she told MPs.
IGG taps children
Earlier in the day, the Inspector General of Government (IGG), Beti Kamya, asked children to start questioning their parents’ wealth.
Kamya said before AIDS was an issue, sex education was unheard of, but when AIDS came, there were certain conversations they had to have with their children.
“This should be the same strategy when fighting corruption. We want to have these conversations with children; we want the children to question their parents’ wealth,” she said.
She made the remarks on Tuesday while appearing on one of the morning television shows in Kampala.
“I’m now bringing the office to the public. I want the public to be co-fighters in this war against corruption,” Kamya said.
She said in this new strategy she is taking, civil servants will be required to explain how they amassed their wealth.
“I have heard that people have started to sell their property because we will do a lifestyle audit,” the IGG said.
She assured the whistleblowers that according to the Whistleblowers’ Act, they are protected.
“And if your information helps us recover funds, you will get a percentage of what is recovered,” Kamya assured the whistleblowers.
“You just need to get a few heads rolling and people will fear stealing government funds. We need adequate funding to do that,” she said.
