Uganda Presidential Nominations Set for September 23-24
The Uganda presidential nominations are officially scheduled for September 23 and 24, 2025, at the Electoral Commission (EC) headquarters in Lubowa, Wakiso District. This marks the formal start of the 2026 general election season. Candidates must submit completed nomination papers, proof of voter registration, signatures from at least two-thirds of Uganda’s districts, academic qualifications, and pay a Shs 20 million nomination fee to be cleared.
EC Enforces Strict Access Rules
Justice Simon Byabakama, EC Chairperson, emphasized orderly procedures, warning that only two persons per aspirant would be allowed into the nomination venue. Candidates were also urged to avoid mobilizing processions. The police have issued a traffic management plan, including road diversions around Lubowa beginning at 5:00 a.m. on both days.
NRM, Opposition Prepare for Key Submissions
The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) confirmed President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni will be nominated on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m., followed by a party rally at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds. Opposition candidates remain active: Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) will present Nandala Mafabi, while Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) leader Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Mugisha Muntu is finalizing endorsement signatures.
National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) initially faced rejected endorsements but will submit additional signatures and appear at the nomination venue as planned. Security in Kampala has been heightened, with strict warnings against unlawful gatherings and disruptions.
Political Analysts Anticipate Tense Campaign
Observers note that the nomination exercise will set the tone for a competitive 2026 campaign. The opposition is expected to mount a significant challenge to Museveni’s decades-long rule, making this nomination period a critical milestone for Uganda’s political landscape.
