Security has been intensified across the Kigezi Sub-region as National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, prepares to launch his highly anticipated regional campaign trail. According to the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson Elly Maate, joint forces from the Uganda Police Force, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), and Counter-Terrorism units have been deployed to safeguard peace and prevent possible disruptions.
Security Agencies on High Alert
Speaking on Sunday, Maate emphasized that all security agencies are on full alert to maintain law and order during Bobi Wine’s Kigezi tour. He urged NUP leaders and supporters to follow the officially approved campaign schedule and comply with security protocols to avoid clashes.
“We call for calm and cooperation from everyone,” Maate said. “Security is ready to ensure that the campaigns are conducted peacefully and that the interests of all Kigezi residents are protected.”
Police Warn Against Provocation
Maate warned that any acts of provocation or confrontation with officers would not be tolerated. “We encourage political tolerance and discipline among all candidates and their supporters,” he added, noting that the safety of the public remains the top priority.
Bobi Wine’s Campaign Itinerary
Bobi Wine is expected to kick off his Kigezi campaign tour today in Rukiga District, before proceeding to Kabale later in the afternoon. On Tuesday, his campaign will move to Rubanda, Kisoro, Kanungu, and Rukungiri districts, where he is set to hold rallies addressing issues of governance, economic inequality, and youth empowerment.
Tense Political Climate in Kigezi
The heightened security comes amid growing political tension in several districts, where previous campaign events by opposition figures have been marred by scuffles with security forces. Authorities say the deployments aim to ensure peace and protect all parties involved, regardless of their political affiliations.
As the 2026 general election season gathers momentum, the Kigezi leg of Bobi Wine’s campaign is seen as a major test of his influence in southwestern Uganda, a region long considered a stronghold of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
