A tragic incident unfolded in Mbarara, Uganda, as a police officer shot and killed a soldier from the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF). The shooting occurred near the Bank of Uganda branch following a misunderstanding between the two individuals.
Police Constable Charles Opio, a member of the Field Force Unit, has been detained in connection with the incident. The victim, identified as Lt Corporal Yeremiah Paper of the Ruhengyere Engineering Brigade in Kiruhura District, lost his life in the altercation.
Eyewitnesses report that the shooting took place as the soldier was taking a selfie with a woman at a bar. Constable Opio intervened, asking him not to take photos in the police barracks, leading to a heated argument. Tragically, Opio then opened fire.
This incident adds to the growing concern over gun violence in Uganda. In recent weeks, the country has seen a number of shooting incidents, including the killing of private security guards and the fatal shooting of a government minister by his bodyguard.
Authorities are investigating the incident and are committed to addressing the issue of gun violence for the safety and well-being of the public.
