During a special service in memory of her predecessor, the late Jacob Oulanyah, the Speaker of Parliament of Uganda, Rt. Hon Anita Annet Among, revealed that she had received numerous phone calls from foreign politicians before the passing of the anti-homosexuality bill.

These calls threatened to cut funding for HIV/AIDS and other aid if the bill was passed. Among said that she was intimidated and had to turn off her phone to avoid further calls.

She declared that she would not be intimidated by visa bans or sanctions from the West and that she would only be intimidated if she were prevented from going to her constituency.

Western countries opposed to the bill are currently imposing a range of sanctions on Uganda, including the possibility of aid cuts, and are urging President Museveni not to assent to the bill.
