Amidst heightened security and intense media attention, former American President Donald Trump surrendered himself on Tuesday for a landmark court hearing in New York. Trump, a Republican billionaire, is the first US President in history to face criminal charges.
The hearing was broadcast live on television, and protesters gathered outside, marking a pivotal moment for the US criminal and political system.
The charges relate to hush money paid to a porn star ahead of the 2016 election. Trump, who was not subjected to a “perp walk,” was expected to plead not guilty to all charges. The arraignment lasted around 15 minutes, during which around 30 counts, including at least one felony, were unsealed.
Trump plans to use the court case to energize his base and raise funds for his bid to reclaim the White House in 2024.
