A tragic motor crash in Katonga region has resulted in the untimely death of Mr. Douglas Matovu, the guild president of Kampala International University (KIU) on the Western Campus. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of a Sunday morning, has left the KIU community and the region in shock and mourning.
At approximately 2 am on Sunday, a fatal collision took place at Zzinda-Bulwada Village in Gomba District along the Mpigi-Kanoni-Sembabule Road. According to eyewitness Mr. Moses Kiberu Ssalambwa, Matovu was driving a Subaru vehicle at high speed and attempted to overtake another vehicle on the road. In an attempt to avoid a head-on collision with an oncoming truck, Matovu swerved, but unfortunately crashed into a Sino truck that was moving ahead.
Tragically, Mr. Matovu succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the accident. The impact of the collision was severe, leaving five other passengers who were traveling with Matovu injured. Two of the passengers sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving treatment at Gombe Hospital, while the remaining three have been transferred to Kampala for more advanced medical care.
The driver of the truck, Seruga Sadat, aged 29, fortunately escaped the crash unharmed. The local authorities swiftly responded to the incident, with the body of Mr. Matovu being taken to Gombe Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination. The involved vehicles were towed to Kanoni police station, awaiting inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV) as part of the ongoing investigation.
Mr. Douglas Matovu was a promising young individual pursuing a Bachelor of Pharmacy at KIU. His dedication and leadership skills were recognized by his peers, resulting in his election as the guild president of the Western Campus. Having been sworn in less than a month before the accident on April 19, his tenure was tragically cut short.
