On Monday, a police officer lost his life after allegedly being shot by suspected robbers whom he was pursuing in Kassanda District. The officer, identified as Corporal Joseph Olaya from Kiganda police station, was engaged in a pursuit of three armed individuals who had just raided a mobile money shop and soda depot in the neighboring Mubende District. The incident has prompted a thorough investigation by the police in Kassanda District.
According to a statement issued by Wamala region police spokesperson, Ms. Racheal Kawala, the aggravated robbery and murder took place at Kyakitanga Village in Manyogaseka Subcounty. It was reported that the targeted mobile money shop and soda depot belonged to a local businessman named Bonani Janvier Fils.
As the robbers made their escape, they utilized a motorcycle, leaving behind the police officer’s firearm but managing to seize his magazine. Tragically, despite efforts to rush Corporal Olaya to Mubende regional referral hospital for immediate medical attention, he succumbed to his injuries and passed away.
In response to the incident, the police’s Crime Intelligence unit, headed by the District Police Commander (DPC) of Kassanda, visited the scene of the crime and commenced gathering crucial evidence and witness statements to facilitate the ongoing investigation.
As authorities intensify their efforts to locate the suspects, who are currently at large, a significant breakthrough was made when a motorcycle with the registration number UDX 755C, a red Bajaj boxer, believed to belong to the perpetrators, was recovered.
This incident comes amidst a series of targeted attacks on mobile money shops and bank agents that have been occurring across the country since June 13. Police spokesperson Fred Enanga highlighted that these attacks involve various methods, including follow-home and front-gate attacks, direct assaults on premises, and incidents during transit to and from banks. As a result, the police are urging the public to exercise caution, adjust their routines, reinforce security measures, and minimize late-night movements.
The loss of Corporal Joseph Olaya is a tragic reminder of the risks faced by law enforcement officers in their tireless efforts to protect the community. The police force is determined to bring the perpetrators of this heinous crime to justice and ensure the safety and security of citizens.
