After hiding in exile for almost five years, former Kampala South Regional Police Commander, Siraje Bakaleke, is now in custody.
Bakaleke, who was an Assistant Commander of Police, fled Uganda in 2018 following the arrest of former Inspector General of Police, Gen. Edward Kale Kayihura. He had been believed to be hiding at a refugee camp in Brussels, Belgium, but was reportedly deported to a nearby East African country after secretly entering the region in November 2022.
According to Ekyooto, Bakaleke was arrested and extradited to Kampala four days ago, after being wanted for abuse of office, the kidnapping of Rwandan refugees, and a possible connection to the murder of opposition supporters during his time as RPC Kampala South. Bakaleke was also implicated in the UGX 3Bn scam, where he was accused of defrauding Korean nationals.
His junior accomplices were caught unlawfully deporting two Koreans who had been robbed by Bakaleke himself.
