Today, the Catholic Church in Uganda is commemorating the life of the late Kampala Metropolitan Archbishop, Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, who passed away on April 3rd, 2021.
Dr. Lwanga was discovered lifeless at his residence in Rubaga, Kampala, and the cause of his death was confirmed to be a heart attack.
A mass is currently being held at Rubaga Cathedral to pay tribute to him, and his successor, Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere, has invited the faithful to eulogize and remember the man of God. Dr. Lwanga served in this position from 2006, succeeding Cardinal Emmanuel Wamala.
He had requested that the government cease gross violations of rights by the security forces before his death. These violations were prevalent during and after the 2021 general elections.
Dr. Lwanga had urged President Yoweri Museveni to discipline his security forces. Dr. Lwanga was interred inside Rubaga Cathedral, making him the fourth Archbishop to be buried in this area.
According to Catholic Church norms, Archbishops of Dr. Lwanga’s stature is required to be buried in cathedrals. This tradition is traceable back to the Vatican.
