President of the republic of Rwanda H.e Paul Kagame

During a joint press briefing with his Kenyan counterpart in the Rwandan capital, Kigali, President Paul Kagame of Rwanda expressed his intention to retire and hand over power after 23 years in office.

He stated that a succession plan was being actively discussed by the ruling party and that his retirement was an inevitability that had to be discussed sooner or later. He also mentioned that he was more interested in creating an environment that would foster leadership rather than choosing his successor.

Mr Kagame has previously discussed retirement, stating that he has no problem becoming an ordinary senior citizen also expressed his interest in joining journalism in his old age.

However, he also indicated last year that he would stand for president again at the next election in 2024.
