Bishop Emeritus Edward Albert Baharagate Passes Away at 93, Leaving a Legacy of Service and Dedication

Bishop Emeritus Edward Albert Baharagate, who served as Bishop of Hoima Catholic Diocese in Bunyoro sub-region of western Uganda, has passed away at the age of 93. The bishop died at Nsambya Hospital in Kampala, where he had been admitted due to health complications related to diabetes. The news of his death was announced by Fr Dominic Ndugwa, Chancellor Hoima Catholic Diocese.

In a statement released by the diocese, the Rt. Rev. Vincent Kirabo expressed deep sorrow and announced the death of the Bishop Emeritus of Hoima Catholic Diocese, the Rt. Rev. Albert Edward Baharagate Akiiki. According to sources at the diocese, Bishop Baharagate had been unwell for years due to his battle with diabetes.

The death of Bishop Baharagate has been mourned by many in the community, including Mr Andrew Byakutaga, the Prime Minister of Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom, who described the bishop as being passionate about faith, culture, hard work, unity, peace, and improving the welfare of the people. Hoima City Mayor Mr Brian Kaboyo also expressed his condolences and praised the Bishop’s contributions to the development of the Church, community, and sports talents of the youth.

Bishop Baharagate was born on February 25, 1930, in Nyamigisa Village, in Masindi District, and was ordained a priest on December 7, 1958. He was appointed Bishop of Hoima on July 7, 1969, and was consecrated as a bishop on August 1, 1969, by Pope Paul VI. On March 9, 1991, he resigned as Bishop of Hoima and was replaced by Bishop Deogratius Byabazaire who has also since passed on.

Last year, Bishop Baharagate launched an environmental conservation campaign aimed at improving humanity. He expressed his concern about the high environmental degradation and climatic changes and urged leaders to rally people to address such threats to humanity. In addition, he was visited by President Museveni at St. Jude Catholic parish in Masindi town when the President visited Masindi District to commission a five-star hotel and Radio Seven.

Bishop Emeritus Edward Albert Baharagate’s death is a significant loss to the Catholic community, the people of Hoima, and Uganda at large. He will be remembered for his service and dedication to his calling, as well as his contributions to the development of the community. May he rest in peace.
