Members of the Otikokin clan in Lango sub-region are seeking compensation for the killing of their son, former State Minister for Labour, Col (rtd) Charles Patrick Okello Engola.
They plan to request blood money from the clan to which the late army Private Wilson Sabiiti belonged in Tooro Sub-region. However, Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister, Mr Steven Kiyinji, stated that Sabiiti acted on official duty at the time of the shooting and that tribalizing the issue is inappropriate.
He recommended that the UPDF, to which Sabiiti belonged, pay any compensation due. A committee from the Lango clan plans to meet with Pte Sabiiti’s clan and family to discuss maintaining good relationships between the tribes, with blood compensation being a mandatory requirement for any clan or tribe that commits such crimes. However, it is uncertain whether the people of Tooro will welcome this form of justice, with two opposing views already emerging.
