Passenger Arrested for Opening Door of Asiana Airlines Flight During Landing in South Korea

May 27, 2023

In a shocking incident that unfolded during the landing of an Asiana Airlines flight in South Korea, a male passenger was arrested for opening the aircraft’s door. Despite the harrowing ordeal, all 194 passengers onboard Flight OZ8124 escaped unharmed as the plane safely touched down at Daegu International Airport. However, the incident left passengers in a state of panic, with some experiencing fainting spells and breathing difficulties, resulting in their hospitalization.

The man, described as being in his 30s, expressed feeling suffocated and a strong desire to disembark the aircraft swiftly. According to reports from Yonhap news agency, the individual cited stress caused by the recent loss of his job as a contributing factor to his distressing actions. During police questioning, it became evident that the man was mentally unstable, hindering a thorough investigation as he was unable to answer any questions while in such a state.

Flight OZ8124, operated by an Airbus A321-200 jet, had taken off from Jeju Island earlier on Friday, departing at approximately 11:45 local time (03:45 GMT). Approximately an hour into the flight, as the plane began its landing approach, the male passenger unexpectedly opened the emergency door, even though the aircraft was still 250 meters above the ground.

Videos shared on social media captured the shocking moment, revealing the gap created on the left-hand side of the plane, with strong winds buffeting the rows of passengers still seated inside. Despite the efforts of flight attendants, who were unable to prevent the man from opening the door due to the imminent landing, the situation escalated further as the man attempted to jump out of the plane following the door’s opening.

Passengers onboard the flight described a scene of chaos and fear. As individuals near the open door began fainting one after another, flight attendants urgently called for medical assistance through the cabin’s speakers. One 44-year-old passenger shared his thoughts, recounting, “I believed the plane was on the verge of exploding. I thought this might be the end.” The incident also deeply affected several school-age children who were traveling to a weekend sporting event, leaving them trembling, crying, and utterly frightened.

The motive behind the man’s actions appears to be rooted in personal circumstances and the emotional turmoil he was experiencing. The incident caused significant disruption and distress among the passengers and crew, highlighting the need for heightened security measures to prevent such occurrences in the future. As investigations continue, authorities will work to understand the full extent of the incident and provide necessary support to those affected by this traumatic event.
