Pilgrims Injured in Jinja City as Vehicle Collides with Them, Driver Arrested

Jinja City, Uganda – In an unfortunate accident today, a group of pilgrims in Mailo Mbili area were left injured after being struck by an Isuzu forward vehicle. The incident resulted in serious injuries to four individuals, while the driver responsible for the collision has been apprehended and identified as 24-year-old Yusuf Mugwa.

Among those injured, Taaka Winfred (62), Nambuya Jennifer (49), John Baptist Basole (66), and Fred Elebo (22) suffered varying degrees of harm. Fortunately, Elebo’s injuries were minor. Prompt medical attention was provided, and the injured pilgrims are currently receiving treatment at a local hospital.

According to ASP James Mubi, the Kiira region police spokesperson, the driver, Yusuf Mugwa, was swiftly taken into custody and is currently being held at CPS Jinja. The vehicle involved in the accident, registered as UBE 168J, has been impounded and is under the custody of Bugembe police station, pending further investigation.

ASP Mubi emphasized the authorities’ commitment to ensuring the safety of pilgrims within Jinja City and Jinja District. To that end, an increased police presence has been implemented, employing patrol vehicles, motorcycles, and foot patrols. Extensive surveillance, including the use of CCTV cameras, is also being employed to monitor critical areas.

ASP Mubi assured the public that intelligence operations are in full swing to prevent similar incidents. Additionally, ambulances have been strategically positioned to promptly respond to emergencies and facilitate the efficient evacuation of pilgrims, if necessary.

Residents and visitors are urged to exercise caution while moving within the area and cooperate fully with law enforcement personnel. Individuals with any relevant information pertaining to the accident are encouraged to come forward and assist the ongoing investigation.

Authorities advise the affected pilgrims and their families to stay in close contact with local authorities and healthcare providers for updates on their recovery progress.

This unfortunate incident serves as a stark reminder of the crucial importance of road safety and the need for constant vigilance. The local authorities continue their tireless efforts to ensure the well-being of all residents and visitors in Jinja City, particularly during this period of heightened pilgrimage activity.
