Original NRA Veteran Col Jack Mucunguzi confirmed dead

June 18, 2023

It has been confirmed that Colonel Jack Mucunguzi, one of the original 27 fighters of President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni’s National Resistance Army (NRA), has passed away. After being hospitalized in recent days, Col Mucunguzi took his last breath on Sunday, June 18.

Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, who visited Col Mucunguzi in the hospital last Wednesday, expressed his condolences to the family of the fallen NRA fighter. He reflected on his visit, noting that Col Mucunguzi had been in an upbeat mood during their encounter.

Tayebwa shared his heartfelt condolences, extending sympathy to Harriet and the children, Kaguta Museveni, Carol and Douglas Rukaari, and the wider UPDF family. He emphasized the enormous contribution of Afande (Colonel) Mucunguzi to the struggle that liberated the country, expressing gratitude for his service.

Member of Parliament Fox Odoi also paid tribute to Col Mucunguzi, highlighting his role in assisting the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) in combating smuggling. Odoi described him as a gem and an unsung hero, emphasizing that aside from being one of the original 27 NRA fighters, Mucunguzi played a crucial role in designing the architecture for anti-smuggling efforts, which led to increased revenue collection. Odoi bid farewell to his friend, Jack.

The passing of Col Mucunguzi serves as a reminder of the challenging and often painful experiences faced by some of the NRA bush war fighters and commanders. Last year, Dr. Kizza Besigye revealed his shock when former NRA bush war commander Kashillingi approached him in need of UGX 50,000 to purchase medicine. Another notable former NRA bush war commander, General Elly Tumwine, who passed away a few months ago, left a clear message for President Museveni regarding the transition of power.
