Several Ugandan travelers have encountered unexpected hurdles in their plans to visit Denmark due to complications with their newly introduced polycarbonate e-passports. The Danish authorities have not yet approved these passports, causing frustration and inconvenience for Ugandan citizens who were eagerly looking forward to traveling to Denmark for various reasons. The situation has raised concerns and highlighted the need for prompt resolution to ensure smooth travel for Ugandans.
On March 30, the Government of Uganda launched polycarbonate e-passports with the aim of enhancing the travel experience, improving document verification, and strengthening travel security for its citizens. These advanced passports, certified and approved by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), were expected to streamline the process of international travel for Ugandans.
Obstacles Faced by Travelers: However, it seems that the Danish authorities have not yet given their approval for the use of these new passports. As a result, Ugandans like Ivan Amanya and Anthony Kamya have encountered difficulties with their visa applications and passport validation for their planned trips to Denmark. Upon submitting their applications, they were informed that the embassy could not process their visas due to the unapproved status of the Ugandan polycarbonate passports.
Visa Facilitation Services Global (VFS Global), a major visa outsourcing and technology service provider, has reportedly received instructions from the Danish Embassy to halt the acceptance of travelers holding these polycarbonate passports. This move has affected approximately 10 Ugandans who were in the process of applying for visas to Denmark.
The reasons behind the Danish authorities’ refusal to approve the new passports have not been explicitly stated in the available information. Efforts to reach out to Simon Mundeyi, the deputy passport controller at Immigration, have been unsuccessful. However, Mundeyi acknowledged the issue in a social media conversation, affirming that the polycarbonate passports are indeed certified and approved by the ICAO.
The delay in resolving this matter has caused frustration and uncertainty among affected travelers. It is crucial for the relevant authorities in Uganda and Denmark to engage in diplomatic discussions and find a swift resolution. The importance of maintaining strong bilateral relations and promoting hassle-free travel between countries cannot be understated.
The current situation faced by Ugandan travelers seeking to visit Denmark with their new polycarbonate e-passports highlights the need for effective communication and collaboration between nations. The delay in the Danish authorities’ approval has resulted in inconvenience and disappointment for Ugandan citizens who were anticipating their trips. It is hoped that a solution can be reached promptly, ensuring that Ugandans can access Denmark with their approved passports and enjoy the benefits of international travel without unnecessary obstacles.
