Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA) President, Hon. Eng. Moses Magogo, recently announced an upcoming visit from Confederation of African Football (CAF) officials to Nakivubo Stadium on July 28-29, 2023. The inspection is a crucial step in Uganda’s bid to co-host the East Africa PAMOJA Bid AFCON 2027 alongside Kenya and Tanzania.
During a press conference at FUFA House in Kampala, Hon. Magogo expressed enthusiasm for the momentous occasion and the potential impact on Ugandan football. He outlined the venues selected for the CAF inspection, including Mulago Hospital, Sheraton Hotel, Kampala Serena Hotel, and training grounds such as Kampala International School Uganda (KISU), Muteesa II Stadium Wankuluku, and St. Mary’s Stadium Kitende.
CAF officials will also assess Mandera National Stadium Namboole, Denver in Garuga, and Nakivubo Stadium, owned by Hamis Kiggundu, for hosting AFCON matches. Additionally, proposed stadiums in Lira and Hoima will be considered in the bid submitted to CAF.
The inspection will extend to Entebbe International Airport and Kabalega Airport Hoima, currently under construction, for evaluation by CAF officials.
Ahead of CAF’s visit, FUFA officials conducted a preliminary assessment of Nakivubo Stadium. Led by Vice President Owek. Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi, the team was accompanied by Ham Enterprises General Manager Omulangira Edward Nakibinge, Eng. Christopher Omara, and Ivan Ssewankambo.
The bid to host AFCON 2027 received significant endorsement when CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe visited Uganda in mid-July the previous year. During meetings with Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament Annet Anita Among and President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, both leaders passionately advocated for Uganda’s hosting bid.
Speaker Anita Among emphasized the potential impact of hosting AFCON 2027 on talent development and societal transformation in Uganda. Dr. Patrice Motsepe, accompanied by CECAFA President and Tanzania Football Federation’s President, Wallace John Karia, pledged support for Uganda’s successful hosting of AFCON 2027.
The upcoming CAF inspection holds great significance for Uganda’s football community, as the nation eagerly awaits the verdict on Nakivubo Stadium’s suitability and the overall success of their bid. Hosting AFCON 2027 would be a momentous achievement for Uganda, signifying its growing prominence in the African football landscape.
