Uganda’s top military court has cleared former Inspector General of Police Gen Kale Kayihura of charges related to failing to protect war material and aiding in the illegal repatriation of Rwanda exiles. The decision marks his acquittal and release from legal proceedings.
In a significant turn of events, the General Court Martial announced on Wednesday that all charges against Gen Kale Kayihura have been dropped. The chairman of the court, Brig Gen Freeman Mugabe, declared Kayihura a “free man” and conveyed the court’s decision to him.
The charges against Kayihura, which included allegations of failing to protect war material and assisting in the illegal repatriation of Rwandan exiles, have been withdrawn by the state. This development results in his acquittal from the legal proceedings.
Brig Gen Mugabe expressed the court’s decision by stating, “The state has withdrawn the charges. You are accordingly set free. I wish you all the best.”
Gen Kale Kayihura served as the Inspector General of Police in Uganda and held a prominent role within the country’s security apparatus. His acquittal follows a legal process that has attracted attention both within Uganda and internationally.
The announcement of his release from charges brings an end to the legal proceedings that have surrounded him, and Gen Kayihura can now resume his civilian life.
