The Najjanakumbi faction of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to party chairman Ambassador Wasswa Birigwa regarding the upcoming delegates conference. The faction demands that Birigwa call off the conference, set to be held in Busabala, or face removal from his position.
This ultimatum follows a day-long meeting of the Najjanakumbi faction, during which district party chairpersons unanimously resolved to oppose Birigwa, his Vice Chairperson for Eastern Hon. Salam Musumba, and Western Hon. Roland Mugumya from holding the conference.
Kasese District FDC chairperson Hon. Robert Centenary stated that Birigwa and his team are acting unconstitutionally by organizing a delegates conference without the endorsement of the party president and secretary-general, who are key accounting officers. He also warned that disciplinary action would be taken against any party member attending Birigwa’s conference.
Concerns have been raised about the party’s financial situation, with allegations that some individuals have raised substantial funds for the conference despite the party’s financial challenges.
In addition to the internal disputes over the delegates conference, there are reports that the FDC Katonga Besigye-led faction is planning to use the conference to expel both the secretary-general, Nathan Nandala Mafabi, and Party President Eng. Patrick Amuriat Oboi, accusing them of being informants.
Ambassador Birigwa has stated that they will deploy police to secure the conference against potential saboteurs.
The situation within the FDC remains tense as different factions within the party clash over leadership and conference issues.
