Scuba divers in Turkey are conducting search operations to locate three firefighters who went missing after their helicopter crashed into a water reservoir near the western resort city of Izmir.
Agriculture and Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumakli revealed that the helicopter crashed while engaged in a mission to collect water for extinguishing a forest fire on Saturday night. The helicopter team consisted of three Kyrgyz nationals and one Turkish citizen. Fortunately, one of the Kyrgyz nationals was rescued and promptly transported to the hospital in good condition.
“The divers have identified the wreckage,” Yumakli stated in televised comments. However, he noted that the current visibility conditions underwater were very low, hindering their search efforts.
Turkey has been grappling with the effects of global warming, which has led to changes in weather patterns and exacerbated a years-long drought in various parts of the country. This heightened the risk of forest fires, prompting Turkey to intensify its emergency response efforts.
In 2021, Turkey experienced devastating wildfires that claimed nine lives and placed significant political pressure on President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s administration. In response to the crisis, Erdogan pushed for the delayed ratification of the Paris Climate Accords by Turkey and allocated resources to acquire new firefighting planes and helicopters.
The ongoing search operation for the missing firefighters is a testament to Turkey’s commitment to responding effectively to forest fires and emergencies, particularly in the face of changing climate conditions.
