Geraldine Namirembe Bitamazire, a prominent figure in Uganda’s educational landscape, has passed away at the age of 84. Known for her pivotal role in shaping Uganda’s education system, Bitamazire served as the country’s education minister twice, and was a Member of Parliament for a decade, leaving behind a legacy of public service and educational advancement.
A Distinguished Career in Education
Born in 1941 in central Uganda, Geraldine Bitamazire made significant contributions to the nation’s education sector. She began her secondary education at Trinity College Nabbingo before pursuing higher education at Makerere University, where she obtained a Diploma in Education, followed by a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1967. She later earned a Master of Arts degree from the same university in 1987.
Bitamazire’s career spanned several influential roles in education. From 1971 to 1974, she served as the headteacher of Tororo Girls School and later became a senior education officer in Uganda’s Ministry of Education and Sports from 1974 to 1979. Her dedication to education earned her an appointment as Uganda’s education minister in 1979, a role she held until 1980. She was reappointed as the Minister of Education and Sports in 2005, after years of serving in other capacities.
Public Service Beyond Education
In addition to her contributions to education, Bitamazire was also deeply involved in public administration. She served as the deputy chairperson of the Teaching Service Commission from 1981 to 1996. Later, she was appointed the state minister for education in 1999, further solidifying her impact on the country’s educational policies and reforms.
Leadership at Uganda Management Institute
In her later years, Bitamazire served as the Chancellor of the Uganda Management Institute (UMI), a position that further reflected her commitment to higher education. UMI, which offers degree programs equivalent to a university, benefited from her leadership in promoting professional management and training in Uganda.
