Ugandan cinema has shone on the global stage as two films, Maama Wange and Dial M For Maya, claimed prestigious awards at Bolivia’s esteemed Black Cat International Film Festival, an event dedicated to showcasing women’s, children’s, and human rights films.

Directed by Isa Masadde Yusuf, Maama Wange secured the “Best Film About Children” award, while Mathew Kavuma’s Dial M For Maya earned recognition for “Best Actress In a Feature Film.”

Doreen Mirembe, the creative mind behind Maama Wange, conveyed her elation at the film’s success, highlighting the profound significance of this achievement on both a personal and industry level.

“Maama Wange’s recognition at the Black Cat International Film Festival in Bolivia is deeply fulfilling. The festival’s focus on women, children, and human rights films adds immense value to this win. Submitting the film without expecting such an honor makes this victory even more uplifting,” expressed Mirembe in an interview with New Vision.

The win holds particular significance for Mirembe as a burgeoning female filmmaker, providing motivation and inspiration not only for herself but also for her collaborators, Director Masadde Isa, the cast, and crew. She emphasized that such international accolades significantly elevate her standing in the industry.

Maama Wange depicts the struggles of a young child striving for education while coping with the loss of her impoverished mother, portraying poignant themes of resilience and adversity.

In contrast, Dial M For Maya delves into the intricacies of relationships, shedding light on subjects like domestic violence, abortion, and family planning.

Masadde Yusuf hinted at expanding Maama Wange’s narrative into a feature film, building on its compelling story to captivate audiences further. Notably, the movie had previously received acclaim at the Ikon Awards last year, cementing its status as a noteworthy cinematic creation.
