The police are actively seeking public assistance in locating Dr. Lawrence Eron, a 56-year-old senior lecturer at Kyambogo University and Dean of the Faculty of Special Needs and Rehabilitation. Dr. Eron is wanted on charges of aggravated defilement involving a 16-year-old visually impaired girl, who is also a student in a secondary school in Mukono District.
According to police spokesperson Mr. Fred Enanga, the victim had accused Dr. Eron of defilement, who also served as a project administrator. The incident occurred when Dr. Eron, as a caretaker of four students, including the victim, traveled to Nairobi, Kenya, for a conference. Upon their return on October 12, the lecturer allegedly assaulted the visually impaired girl in his car.
The victim, who uses glasses during the day for vision, fell unconscious after taking water provided by Dr. Eron. When she woke up, she discovered injuries and inflammation on her private parts, suggesting a sexual assault while she was unconscious. The victim reported the incident to a senior woman teacher at her school in Mukono, leading to the involvement of the police.
Dr. Eron was initially granted police bond but absconded on December 14, 2023. The police have now issued a public appeal for information regarding his whereabouts. Dr. Eron is HIV positive, and the victim was under his authority, adding complexity to the case.
Authorities have gathered DNA samples from the suspect’s car that match specimens found on the victim’s body, providing evidence of sexual intercourse. The police are urging anyone with information on the matter or other potential victims to contact CID headquarters, KMP headquarters, or the National Operations Command Centre on Tel: +256776999136.
The case highlights the vulnerability of students, especially those with disabilities, and the urgency in addressing issues related to sexual assault and abuse within academic institutions.
