The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development in Uganda plans to begin oil exploration in the Teso Sub-region next month, according to Mr. Joshua Lukaye, the principal geochemist in the Ministry. The announcement was made during a consultation meeting with district leaders from Soroti and Kalaki.
The mineral exploration is set to continue as planned in consultation with various stakeholders, including landowners. The exploration will cover the districts of Soroti, Kaberamaido, Kalaki, Serere, and Katakwi in the Kyoga basin.
While Uganda has already discovered oil in the Albertine region in Lake Albert, the government aims to identify additional basins with petroleum potential. Mr. Lukaye emphasized the need for sustainable production and the importance of searching for more oil to secure long-term resources.
In Soroti, the government plans to search for oil in sub-counties such as Ochokican, Kamuda, Lale, Katine, and, in Kalaki, exploration will focus on Bululu.
Local leaders expressed concerns about the lack of thorough engagement meetings with communities affected by the exploration. There are calls for broader consultation with the local people to address issues such as compensation and ensure transparency in the exploration process. The leaders want to avoid unresolved issues similar to those seen in the Albertine region.
Despite concerns, the Ministry is moving forward with its plans for oil exploration in the Teso Sub-region, signaling potential economic developments but also highlighting the importance of transparent and inclusive engagement with local communities.
