A tragic road accident claimed the life of a prominent Masaka businessman, Haji Muzamiru Matembe Nsibambi, on Monday morning. The incident occurred when the truck he was travelling in collided with another truck at Kalagala village, Mpigi Town Council, along the Kampala-Masaka Highway.
According to Mr. Karim Majid, the spokesperson for the Katonga region police, the collision resulted in the tragic demise of Haji Muzamiru Matembe Nsibambi. The wreckage of the involved trucks was subsequently towed to the police station for inspection, while investigations into the accident are ongoing.
“The body of the deceased was transported to Gombe Hospital Mortuary for post-mortem as the police conduct the investigation about the possible cause of the accident,” Mr. Majid stated.
An eyewitness, Mr. John Kalyesubula, a resident of Kalagala village, recounted hearing a loud bang around 2 am as he walked home. Upon reaching the scene, he found occupants from the two trucks involved in the accident, with one person having tragically lost their life. Witnesses attributed the accident to the alleged speeding of the Sino truck driver.
Family sources revealed that Haji Muzamiru Matembe Nsibambi, a resident of Nyendo in Masaka City, was a renowned coffee trader in the greater Masaka region. He had been on a business trip to Kampala City on March 10, 2024, but tragically met his demise in the motor accident while returning home.
The incident underscores the persistent challenge of road safety in Uganda. The annual police crime report for 2023 indicated a total of 23,608 road crashes, resulting in 4,179 fatalities. Such accidents highlight the urgent need for enhanced measures to promote road safety and prevent further loss of life on the nation’s highways.
