Mystery Surrounds Death of Nigerian Footballer in Uganda

February 26, 2025

KAMPALA – The sudden and tragic death of Nigerian footballer Abubakar Lawal has sparked shock and speculation, as Ugandan authorities launch an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Lawal, a striker for Vipers Sports Club, reportedly fell from a third-floor balcony at the Voicemall Shopping Arcade in Kampala, where he had been visiting a Tanzanian friend. He was rushed to the hospital but was later pronounced dead.

Lawal, affectionately known as the “Man from Sokoto,” was a key figure in Vipers SC’s 2023 league and cup double victory and had also played for AS Kigali in Rwanda. His untimely death has sent ripples through the football community, with tributes pouring in from teammates, fans, and former clubs.

Conflicting Reports and Calls for a Thorough Probe

Initial reports on Lawal’s death have been conflicting, with some Ugandan media outlets suggesting he was involved in a motorcycle accident rather than a fall. The uncertainty surrounding the incident has prompted calls for a comprehensive investigation, with Nigerian football icon Ahmed Musa urging authorities to ensure transparency.

“Lawal’s soul deserves a thorough investigation, and justice must be served if anyone is found guilty,” Musa wrote on social media.

Ugandan police have confirmed that CCTV footage is being reviewed, and several individuals, including Lawal’s friend Omary Naima, are being questioned to determine what transpired before the fatal fall. Officers have also recovered some of Lawal’s belongings, including two smartphones, shoes, headsets, and a training kit, as part of the ongoing probe.

Football Community in Mourning

Vipers SC, in an emotional tribute, described Lawal as a kind and generous soul who touched the lives of many. His former club, Nasarawa United, also expressed heartbreak over his passing, while Ugandan footballer Mustafa Kizza shared that Lawal was “a kind, talented, and loving person” who would be deeply missed.

As investigations continue, both Nigerian and Ugandan football authorities will be closely watching the developments. Was this a tragic accident, or is there more to the story? For now, Lawal’s loved ones and fans await answers, hoping that justice—if needed—will be served.
