Uganda has won the battle to retain the United Nations (UN) Regional Service Centre in Entebbe (RSCE).
Uganda’s ambassador and permanent representative to the UN, Adonia Ayebare, said the UN Security Council maintained the status at RSCE in a meeting on Friday.
The centre employs over 400 Ugandans and is contributing significantly to the economy of the Entebbe municipality and the country at large.
In early 2018, President Yoweri Museveni wrote to the UN secretary general, Antonio Guterres, protesting the planned move to relocate the centre to Kenya’s capital Nairobi.
Guterres had reportedly approved the plan to move their base, but it received opposition from the Ugandan government.
The RSCE is a shared service centre based in Entebbe and it consolidates administrative and support functions previously located in various field missions in a less volatile, more family-friendly regional location.
Its goal is to provide efficient, client-orientated and scalable services while reducing the missions’ footprints to UN field missions across Africa.
Uganda is the largest contributor of troops to the UN-supported African Union Mission in Somalia and currently hosts the largest number of refugees in Africa.
