Customs officials from Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) at Entebbe International Airport have reported that they discovered over 90 new and used iPhones that were left unclaimed on the conveyor belt by an unidentified traveler on Sunday.
The Acting Manager of Entebbe Customs, Simon Esunget, stated that the individual arrived at the airport on an Egypt Air flight with personal luggage that included two audio subwoofers.
Upon inspection of the baggage through the X-ray scanner for Non-Intrusive Inspection, the officials found the hidden smartphones and subwoofers. The phones were valued at $60,000 (approximately Shs222 million) by the tax body.
Mr. Esunget added that concealing high-value items at customs border posts is still common but the use of X-ray scanners has proven to be effective in exposing schemes of notorious smugglers.
URA spokesperson, Mr. Ibrahim Bbossa, stated that the tax body has strengthened controls on passenger arrivals to facilitate legitimate travelers and deter any attempts to conceal uncustomed goods.
The URA uses non-intrusive inspection (NII) technology, including X-ray scanners, at various border points to safeguard revenue and enhance supply chain safety and security without tampering with the inspected cargo.
