Karamoja Affairs Minister, Mary Goretti Kitutu, has been charged with two counts of causing loss of public property and conspiracy to defraud in the Anti-Corruption Court in Kololo, Kampala.
She is accused of diverting 9,000 prepainted iron sheets from the Karamoja Community Empowerment Programme for her own benefit and the benefit of third parties between June 2022 and January 2023.
Kitutu’s brother and a Senior Assistant Secretary in the Ministry of Karamoja Affairs are also charged with receiving stolen property and corruption, respectively. The suspects are currently in the court holding cells awaiting to be arraigned before the magistrate.
The charges relate to the alleged failure of the minister to deliver relief items to the Karamoja community, some of which were allegedly diverted to non-intended beneficiaries, including the minister’s close relatives.
