On April 7th, 2023, a fatal accident occurred at Kyoja Trading Centre along the Masaka-Mbarara highway. The Territorial traffic Police at Kinoni registered the accident at around 4:00 pm and reported that nine people lost their lives on the spot.
The accident involved two motor vehicles: a Toyota Alphard with registration number UBL 314C, which was traveling from Kampala towards Mbarara, and a fuel tanker with registration numbers SSD 327S/SSD 137Q, which was traveling from Mbarara/Kinoni town. The two vehicles collided head-on.
Preliminary findings suggest that the Alphard driver was speeding and driving on the right side of the road, resulting in the head-on collision with the fuel tanker. The accident claimed the lives of seven adults and two juveniles, who were passengers in the Alphard.
The driver of the fuel truck and his assistant sustained injuries and were taken to Masaka referral hospital for treatment.
Further investigations into the incident are ongoing, and more details will be provided in due course.
The police urge all motorists traveling to upcountry for Easter celebrations to exercise caution while driving, avoid speeding, using phones while driving, drinking and driving, and all other road indiscipline that can lead to accidents. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and loved ones of the deceased victims.
