South Africa’s bid to extradite Atul and Rajesh Gupta, two brothers accused of profiting from their close links to former President Jacob Zuma, from the UAE has failed. The Indian-born Guptas fled South Africa after a major corruption scandal was uncovered by a judicial commission.

Although the brothers were arrested in the UAE last June, the UAE rejected South Africa’s extradition request on the grounds that the legal documentation did not meet the strict standards outlined in the extradition agreement between the two countries.

The decision is a setback for South Africa’s efforts to bring the Guptas to justice. An official inquiry found that the Guptas tried to influence political and economic decisions through their close links with Mr. Zuma.
