Police brutally raided pressers held by Makerere University students who oppose draconian guild laws that prevent partisan politics from participating in guild elections.
The students were led by 88th Guild Vice President Nattabi Margaret, who was expelled from the 89th Guild Competition due to allegations that her camp had participated in an illegal gathering known as “kimeeza” held at Mitchell Hall.
Students were scheduled to hold a press conference on campus to comment on the April 14 election. However, the police presence was extremely dangerous, prompting them to secure a venue at the Emerald Hotel on Bombo Road.
However, as soon as the student hold began, a heavily armed police officer from the Wandageya police station field force jumped into the hold and began beating the guards.
Acting in complete disregard for standing orders requiring female police officers to arrest fellow women, a senior male police officer beat and strangled Nattabhi Margaret in front of cameras.
