Members of Parliament from the Karamoja Sub-region have pledged to ensure that justice is served for locals who were arrested as suspected warriors aiding cattle rustling.
The suspects had been detained in Gulu District since last year and were returned home last week in appalling conditions, with some suffering from malnourishment and tuberculosis infections.
The Jie County MP, Mr Peter Abrahams Lokii, who transported the juveniles and youth from Gulu prison, expressed shock at their state and vowed to seek justice for them. He also called on human rights defenders to take an interest in the case.
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions had requested their release as there was no implicating evidence against them.
Some relatives of the suspects struggled to identify their children among the group who returned, and the family of Lokomolo Lomiat, who died on remand, is still seeking justice.
Human rights agencies are also involved, with the Uganda Human Rights Commission planning to formally open a complaint and investigate the allegations of torture and starvation.
