On Monday, a counter-terrorism office in northwest Pakistan was rocked by two explosions that resulted in the deaths of at least eight people and left several others injured, according to the police. The Swat Valley region, where the explosions occurred, was previously under the control of Islamist militants, but they were ousted in a military operation in 2009.
Provincial police chief Akhtar Hayat stated that it is unclear what caused the explosions, but there was an old ammunition store in the office. He added that the police are investigating whether the explosions were caused by the ammunition store or a militant attack. No one has claimed responsibility for the incident so far.
Hayat noted that most of the individuals who died were police counter-terrorism officers. The regional hospital administration stated that it received several wounded individuals, some of whom are in critical condition.
The incident underscores the ongoing security concerns in Pakistan, where militant groups have carried out several attacks in recent years. The government has launched several military operations to combat these groups, but they continue to threaten the country’s stability and security.
