The Public Prosecutor of Burundi, Sylvestre Nyandwi, has stated that Gen. Alain-Guillaume Bunyoni, a former Prime Minister of the country, is currently in police custody. This announcement comes after Bunyoni was reported missing on April 19th following a police search at his home as part of an ongoing investigation.
Nyandwi explained in a statement on April 23rd that a warrant to search Bunyoni’s home had been issued due to information suggesting that he may have been involved in criminal activity. The Public Prosecutor also indicated that additional evidence is currently being gathered against Bunyoni to be presented before the prosecutor of the Republic, who will then make a decision based on the law.
Bunyoni was arrested on April 21st in Nyamuzi, Kabezi Municipality of Bujumbura.
In September 2022, President Evariste Ndayishimiye dismissed Bunyoni from his position as Prime Minister, replacing him with Gervais Ndirakobuca. The office of Prime Minister had been abolished in Burundi in 1998 and was reinstated in 2020 when Ndayishimiye became president and appointed Bunyoni.
His dismissal occurred during a period of political tensions in the country, with President Ndayishimiye warning government officials against attempting a coup d’état. Bunyoni previously served as the Minister for Internal Security during the regime of late President Pierre Nkurunziza and had also been the former police chief.
