Agaba Jacent, a young law student who died from pressure and hypertension during an oral examination at the Law Development Centre, was laid to rest on Thursday. Her dream of serving the country in a distinguished legal career was tragically cut short due to the alleged inhumane treatment by administrators at the only law certifying institution in the country.
Jacent was reportedly insulted and grilled during her final oral examination, which should have been her final paper. According to a source at the institution, when Jacent blacked out, one administrator in the room declared that she was acting and said, “Leave her to die. She will not be the first to die. We have buried so many students here so she won’t be the first.” J
acent was later rushed to a nearby clinic by her classmates, but was pronounced dead on arrival. There are several reports of similar deaths of students at the Law Development Centre who have perished due to the pressure imposed by administrators. Some students have even taken their own lives after failing to cope with the stress.
The institution has reportedly turned into a source of agony and fury for young lawyers whose papers are disappeared by administrators, and some are left unmarked to deliberately compel students to repeat other academic years.
In an ongoing investigation, the administrators responsible for the inhumane treatment of students will be identified. It is important to note that the implicated staff have immunity provided by the institution’s principal, Mr. Frank Othembi.
