EAC Regional Force Commander Leaves DRC Mission Area Citing Safety Concerns

April 28, 2023

Major General Jeff Nyagah, the commander of the East African Community Regional Force (EACRF) in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), has left the mission area citing safety concerns after receiving threats from unknown persons.

In a memo to the EAC Secretary-General, Nyagah said that he had opted to exit Goma due to an aggravated threat to his safety and a systematic plan to frustrate the efforts of the EACRF.

He also cited a negative media campaign targeting his personality and alleged complacency in handling the M23 armed group. Nyagah further viewed the suspension of EACRF’s Facebook account and failure by Kinshasa to cater to the Force Headquarters’ administrative costs as sabotage to the force’s efforts.

He has left for Nairobi for consultations on the ongoing processes and the force’s mandate that has since expired.

Meanwhile, Nyagah has been appointed as the General Officer, Western Command in new postings and appointments of officers of the Kenya Defence Forces.
