Fazir Mayanja, a prominent government critic residing in the United Kingdom, was intercepted upon arrival at Entebbe Airport by immigration authorities, who subsequently handed him over to security for screening. The incident has raised fears of potential intimidation and suppression of dissenting voices in Uganda.
NUP party president, Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert, widely known as Bobi Wine, took to social media to provide detailed information about Mayanja’s abduction.
According to Bobi Wine, Mayanja, a vocal advocate for good governance and a critic of the Museveni regime, arrived in Uganda from Ireland at approximately 3:30 am. Upon arrival, he was immediately intercepted by authorities and handed over to ‘security’ for screening. A physical search and profiling were conducted on Mayanja, following which his phones were allegedly disconnected. Furthermore, Mayanja’s family members, who were waiting for him at the airport, have been denied access to him thus far.
The disconcerting aspect of the situation is that more than 15 hours have passed without any clarity on Mayanja’s whereabouts. It remains uncertain whether he is still being held at the airport or if he has been forcibly taken to undisclosed locations of detention. This incident is viewed as yet another attempt to intimidate and silence voices of dissent against the current regime, prompting condemnation from individuals of good conscience.
The incident involving Fazir Mayanja highlights the pressing need to protect freedom of expression and promote an environment where differing opinions and criticisms can be voiced without fear of retribution. The situation has sparked concerns about the state of democracy and human rights in Uganda.
As the public closely monitors the unfolding events, it is crucial for the international community and individuals advocating for human rights to take note of such incidents and demand transparency, accountability, and the safeguarding of fundamental freedoms.
Further updates on Fazir Mayanja’s situation will be provided as information becomes available, with an emphasis on the need for collective action to protect individuals from unjust treatment and ensure the preservation of democratic values in Uganda.
