In an address to a gathering of farmers, President Museveni lauded their efforts in commercial agriculture, recognizing their transformative impact on their lives. Emphasizing the need for value addition, he urged farmers to take steps to further improve their standard of living.
During his speech, the President highlighted the success of countries like Indonesia, where coffee is enriched with milk and other spices, roasted, ground, and sold at a premium price. He encouraged Ugandan farmers to draw inspiration from such practices and adopt value addition techniques.
President Museveni assured the farmers of ongoing support, announcing plans to provide essential equipment. This includes a coffee roasting machine, a coffee grinding machine, and a Fuso box body motor vehicle, all valued at a total of Shs. 400 million, to aid in the transportation and processing of their produce.
Expressing their gratitude, a representative of the farmers, Kanamwangi, thanked President Museveni for his visit and acknowledged the positive impact of government initiatives such as the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) and Operation Wealth Creation (OWC). Kanamwangi highlighted the distribution of 385,000 coffee seedlings through OWC, which had significantly benefited the community.
Kanamwangi also shed light on the challenges faced by farmers, particularly the high costs associated with coffee roasting, grinding, and transportation to the market. He expressed appreciation for the President’s generous donation of machinery and the commitment to provide a Fuso box body truck, which will alleviate these obstacles.
Moreover, Kanamwangi urged fellow youth to embrace government development programs as a means to combat poverty. Drawing from personal experience, he shared his journey from a single-acre coffee plantation, initially provided by the President, to expanding it to seven acres. This expansion has resulted in substantial income, with expectations of further growth.
President Museveni’s visit and his pledge of support demonstrate the government’s dedication to empowering rural communities and fostering agricultural productivity.
