Former National Resistance Army (NRA) combatant and revered figure, Retired Colonel Jack Mucunguzi, was mourned as a patriot, freedom fighter, and devoted father by friends and family members on Tuesday. The distinguished veteran passed away on Sunday at Nakasero Hospital in Kampala after a battle with cancer. Born in 1958 in Kitojo, Rukungiri district, Mucunguzi received his education at Katebo Primary School, Rushozi Primary School, and later Mbarara High School.
Having joined the liberation struggle in 1979 following the departure of President Idi Amin, Mucunguzi underwent cadet training in Monduli, Tanzania. He stood among the few surviving original members of the NRA fighters who bravely attacked Kabamba in 1981, earning him a reputation of courage and resilience. Notably, Mucunguzi also held command over Section 4 of the NRA’s nucleus.
In 1987, Mucunguzi tied the knot with his beloved wife, Harriet Mucunguzi, and their union brought forth four children: Kakwanzi, Philip, Nadia, and Timothy. Fondly remembering their father, Mucunguzi’s children shared cherished memories that painted him as not only a caring parent but also a mentor and friend.
During the church service held to honor Mucunguzi’s life, his wife Harriet tearfully described him as a “man of all seasons, a loving father, and a patriarch to their family.” The government representative, Major General Jim Muhwezi Katugugu, spoke of Mucunguzi’s immense significance to the country, praising him as a patriot, freedom fighter, revolutionist, and security stalwart.
The final farewell to Retired Colonel Jack Mucunguzi will take place on Wednesday, June 21, 2023, in his ancestral home of Rwenjeru, Biharwe, Mbarara. The somber proceedings will commence with a funeral service at 11:00 a.m., where friends, family, and fellow comrades will gather to pay their last respects to the fallen hero. The legacy of Mucunguzi’s service and his commitment to the liberation cause will forever be remembered. May he rest in eternal peace.
