In a bold move that echoes the history of the ill-fated Titanic, Royal Caribbean International is preparing to launch the ‘Icon of the Seas’, touted as the “world’s largest cruise ship”. Despite the recent Titanic submarine disaster and the sinking of the original Titanic, the cruise liner’s creators seem undeterred as they unveil their ambitious project.
Measuring a staggering 1,198 feet in length and weighing 250,800 gross tonnage, the Icon of the Seas aims to surpass all predecessors. With 20 decks, seven swimming pools, and record-breaking waterslides, the vessel boasts a capacity of accommodating 7,600 guests and 2,350 crew members. This makes it significantly larger than the Titanic, the once-largest ship in the world.

Scheduled to commence operations in January 2024, the Icon of the Seas promises a remarkable array of features and attractions. Passengers will be captivated by the ‘AquaDome’ situated at the ship’s front, offering breathtaking 220-degree views and a stunning 55-foot waterfall. The ‘Suite Neighborhood’ includes a Mediterranean restaurant and a two-floor sundeck, while the ‘Central Park’ provides a verdant oasis with real plants spread across five decks. For those seeking thrills, ‘Chill Island’ boasts four swimming pools and a swim-up bar, while ‘Thrill Island’ is home to the largest waterpark at sea, aptly named ‘Category 6’. Additional highlights include the ‘Surfside’ family area, the ocean-facing ‘Royal Promenade’, and ‘The Hideaway’ with its mesmerizing 180-degree view.
Ticket reservations for the Icon of the Seas opened in October 2022, with prices starting at $1,537 per person. Presently, the most affordable ticket available is priced at $1,851 for an interior room on a September 2024 cruise from Miami to the Western Caribbean. The ship’s most luxurious suite, offering unparalleled opulence, comes with a hefty price tag of $10,864 for a March 2024 voyage. Additionally, the Icon of the Seas offers a seven-day package for a captivating journey to the Eastern Caribbean.
However, as excitement builds for the Icon of the Seas, concerns arise over its connection to the tragic history of the Titanic. The original Titanic, a pinnacle of luxury during its maiden voyage in 1912, met a devastating fate after colliding with an iceberg, resulting in a significant loss of life. More recently, in 2023, the Titanic submarine suffered a catastrophic implosion during a deep-sea dive, tragically claiming the lives of all onboard.
While the Icon of the Seas aims to redefine the cruise ship experience, questions remain regarding the lessons learned from past maritime disasters. As passengers eagerly anticipate their voyage aboard the “world’s largest cruise ship,” it remains to be seen whether comprehensive safety measures have been implemented to ensure their well-being and address concerns raised by the Titanic’s legacy. Only time will reveal whether history will repeat itself or if the Icon of the Seas will navigate uncharted waters successfully.
