Renowned American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan has decided to sell his Scottish Highland retreat, Aultmore House and estate. The 82-year-old musician, famous for hits like “Blowin’ in the Wind” and “Like a Rolling Stone,” has owned the property for 17 years, but due to recent circumstances, he has put it on the market for offers over £3 million.
Aultmore House, a stunning 16-bedroom A-listed stately home located in Nethy Bridge within the Cairngorm National Park, was purchased by Dylan and his brother David Zimmerman back in 2006 for £2.2 million. Unfortunately, they have been unable to visit the property since the onset of the pandemic.
The main house boasts several reception rooms, including a dedicated music room, along with 11 bathrooms and an additional seven bedrooms in the attic. The extensive grounds surrounding the property feature cottages, a spacious greenhouse, a walled garden, follies, a fountain, and even a croquet lawn.
Tom Stewart-Moore, an estate agent from Knight Frank, shed light on Dylan’s decision to sell, explaining that the legendary singer-songwriter has been unable to enjoy the property in recent years. Prior to the pandemic, Dylan and his brother would spend a few weeks at Aultmore House annually, drawn to its breathtaking beauty and, above all, its unparalleled privacy.
According to BBC, the Aultmore House, an Edwardian mansion set within 25 acres of land, was originally built between 1911 and 1914 as a holiday residence for Archibald Merrilees, the son of a Scottish merchant who played a role in establishing Russia’s first department store. Over the years, the property has served various purposes, including as a hunting lodge, a convalescent hospital during World War Two, and even a finishing school owned by a New Zealand-born spy who endured imprisonment in Colditz.
Dylan acquired Aultmore House through his brother, acting as his agent, and the property previously operated as a luxury bed and breakfast and a sought-after wedding venue. It even gained recognition on the television drama series “Monarch of the Glen.” Despite Dylan’s ownership, the estate has remained open for holidays and events, featuring three cottages available for rent at approximately £900 per week.
Nestled at the end of a picturesque tree-lined driveway, Aultmore House offers mesmerizing views of the Cairngorm mountains and is located approximately 13 miles from Aviemore. The Scottish countryside and its rich culture have played a significant role in Dylan’s artistic journey, as he has long acknowledged his debt to Scottish folk music.
As Dylan prepares to part ways with his cherished Highland retreat, the property presents a unique opportunity for prospective buyers to own a slice of Scottish history and natural beauty. The sale marks the end of an era for the musical legend, leaving behind a legacy that intertwines his work with the scenic charm of the Scottish Highlands.
