The Minister of Gender Hon. Betty Amongi Akena on Friday handed over 100 tailoring machines and 100 assorted saloon equipment to 200 vulnerable girls who have acquired various skills, including those trained under the presidential skilling programme.
The Minister applauded H.E the President who has tasked her Ministry to design programmes to address youth unemployment and noted that if the pilot succeed, then the programme will be rolled out nationally The Minister Pledged to provide from her own initiative additional 200 equipments to support the girls who could not benefit from the programme due to limited funds that couldn’t reach all the beneficiaries who had applied.
During the speech, the prime minister of Lango Cultural Foundation requested the minister to also support boys. The Minister then directed the mayors of Lira city west and East to identify common spaces where she will establish common user facilities to catter for boys in welding, carpentry, garages, etc. She also delivered cash of 300,000,000 (three hundred million) to support women in the market with cheap loans to be revolved at 10% per annum.
The loan is to be run through a cooperative society that has been providing similar lending schemes in Oyam South for the last three years.
She pledged an additional 500m for the loan scheme if the initial 300m is utilised well.
The Minister encouraged the population to make use of PDM and other government programmes that will get them out of poverty.
