Tragedy struck the Nigerian city of Zaria as a mosque collapsed during Friday prayers, leading to the loss of at least seven lives, according to local officials.
The incident occurred while hundreds of worshippers were inside the mosque for Friday prayers. The collapse prompted an immediate investigation to determine the cause. Local reports suggest that a crack had been discovered in one of the mosque’s walls the previous day, raising concerns about structural integrity.
The mosque, believed to be more than a century old, has been an integral part of the community’s religious life. This unfortunate incident once again highlights Nigeria’s history of building collapses and the urgent need for vigilant safety measures.
Initially, four bodies were recovered from the debris, and later, after thorough search and rescue efforts, three additional bodies were found, according to Abdullahi Kwarbai, a spokesman for the local council.
Emir Mallam Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli confirmed that a team of engineers had already been mobilized to address the crack in the mosque’s structure prior to the tragic collapse. The cause of the collapse remains a focal point of the ongoing investigation, as authorities work to ascertain the exact circumstances that led to the incident.
