In a recent development, the security forces successfully detected and safely detonated an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) near the main entrance of a church in an undisclosed location. Police spokesperson Fred Enanga confirmed that several other IEDs were also recovered from different areas within Kampala and Wakiso districts. Notably, one of these dangerous devices was found abandoned at the Peaceful Guesthouse in Ngobe-Bunamwanya, Wakiso.
This marks a significant escalation, with a total of six IEDs discovered and safely neutralized within a span of just two days. Furthermore, the number of suspects apprehended in connection with these incidents, now linked to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels, has increased to six individuals.
MPs Advocate for Enhanced Security Measures
On Tuesday, Members of Parliament (MPs) raised concerns regarding the prevailing security threats posed by terrorists and called upon the government to implement comprehensive measures to protect the nation’s citizens.
The legislators specifically urged the government to establish security protocols for individuals frequenting markets, churches, and bars. These guidelines are intended to ensure the safety and security of those visiting these public places.
ADF’s Weakened Status
It’s worth noting that the last time President Yoweri Museveni addressed the nation was on July 13, 2023, during which he addressed the suspected ADF attack on a secondary school in Kasese municipality, which resulted in the tragic loss of over 40 lives.
During his previous address, the President emphasized that the ADF had been considerably weakened. He characterized the remaining threat as primarily an intelligence challenge, with the need to locate the remnants and monitor their activities.
The President reiterated that the ADF, by targeting unarmed civilians such as schoolchildren, had revealed its diminished capacity to conduct military operations. He highlighted the successful efforts to degrade the ADF from a formidable military force to a group of terrorists primarily seeking soft targets.
Upcoming Presidential Address
In response to the ongoing security situation, a statement from the Deputy Presidential Press Secretary, Faruk Kirunda, has confirmed that the President will be addressing the nation. This address will be broadcast live on all television and radio stations, emphasizing the gravity of the situation and the need for the public to remain informed and vigilant.
