Uganda Cranes have announced the departure of their head coach, Milutin Sredojevic, widely known as ‘Micho’. The decision to part ways was described as a mutual agreement between Micho and the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA).
The decision to end the contract comes after Uganda Cranes failed to qualify for the AFCON finals for the second consecutive time under Micho’s leadership. During his tenure, the Cranes struggled in both senior and CHAN (African Nations Championship) teams, often displaying a lack of tactical ability, even in matches considered easy.
Micho’s teams were known for their defensive style of play, which departed from the more exciting brand of football that Uganda Cranes was once known for. The decision to part ways raises questions about whether he was the right person to lead the Cranes to success.
During his second stint as head coach, from 2021 until his departure, Micho oversaw 17 competitive games for the Cranes, with a record of seven wins, five draws, and five losses. His first stint, from 2013 to 2017, saw him lead the team to qualify for the 2017 AFCON finals in Gabon, ending a 39-year wait for the tournament.
The departure of Micho marks a new chapter for Uganda Cranes as they search for a coach who can help the team regain its competitive edge on the international stage.
