Two children tragically lost their lives due to flash floods in Moroto District on Wednesday. The incidents occurred in the areas of Katanga and Kakoliye, highlighting the region’s vulnerability during the rainy season.
In Kakoliye, 13-year-old Lucia Illukol was swept away by a river while attempting to cross with her companion, Hellen Aleper. Although community members managed to rescue Aleper, Illukol was carried away by the strong currents and drowned. Karamoja Police spokesperson Mike Longole confirmed that Aleper is safe and will be handed over to her parents soon.
In another heartbreaking incident in Katanga, 2-year-old Evaline Subuwa was inside her home when floodwaters surged through, sweeping her away. She was quickly retrieved by residents and rushed to Moroto Regional Hospital, but unfortunately, she passed away shortly after arrival.
The police have issued warnings to the community about the dangers of crossing seasonal rivers during the rainy season and constructing homes near riverbanks. Despite these warnings, residents are frustrated with the government’s lack of essential infrastructure, such as bridges, within Moroto Municipality.
Joan Adome, a local resident, expressed her concerns, stating, “The road from Kakoliye crossing the river is extremely dangerous, yet the municipality has failed to install a bridge.” This sentiment reflects the urgent need for improved infrastructure to prevent future tragedies and ensure the safety of the community.
