Alphabet’s Google has initiated another round of job cuts. This time, the Google platforms and devices layoffs affect hundreds of employees working on Android, Pixel phones, and the Chrome browser.
According to The Information, which cited a person familiar with the matter, the layoffs occurred Thursday. The affected team plays a major role in developing Google’s key hardware and software products.
These cuts follow Google’s voluntary buyout offers made in January to staff in the same unit. The company previously merged its Platforms and Devices teams, aiming to streamline operations.
A Google spokesperson confirmed the move in a statement to The Information. “Since combining the Platforms and Devices teams last year, we’ve focused on becoming more nimble and operating more effectively. This included making some job reductions in addition to the voluntary exit program that we offered in January,” the spokesperson said.
Google has not responded to a Reuters request for comment. However, the latest round of layoffs comes after similar moves earlier this year.
In February, Bloomberg reported that Google had trimmed jobs in its cloud division. That round reportedly affected only select teams.
The Google platforms and devices layoffs mark the latest development in Alphabet’s ongoing workforce restructuring. In January 2023, the tech giant announced it would cut 12,000 jobs—about 6% of its global staff.
As the tech industry continues adapting to economic pressure and post-pandemic shifts, major firms like Google are reevaluating their internal structures. While the company seeks efficiency, the layoffs highlight growing concerns among employees about job security in a changing digital landscape.
